My Favorite (& too undersung) Hymn

I was pondering things today & everything that is going on in the world. And this hymn kept playing in my mind. Since the first time I heard this (at my sister Teresa's old boyfriend's father's funeral) it has been my favorite. It is a hymn of such depth & a very much needed message in today's world.

Know This, That Every Soul Is Free
LDS Hymn Book, page 240

Know this, that every soul is free
To choose his life & what he'll be;
For this eternal truth is giv'n:
That God will force no man to heav'n.

He'll call, persuade, direct aright,
And bless with wisdom, love, & light,
In nameless ways be good & kind,
But never force the human mind.

Freedom & reason make us men;
Take these away, what are we then?
Mere animals, and just as well
The beasts may think of heav'n or hell.

May we no more our pow'rs abuse,
But ways of truth & goodness choose;
Our God is pleased when we improve
His grace and seek his perfect love.

Wow...those are great lyrics. It does make you think too. I can think of a few people in the news today that should read those.

I love how as we go thru life the hymns take on more personal meaning to us. They become beautiful and meaningful and we understand them. Otherwise I think our sacrament hymn would be "Popcorn Popping"
